Facebook Includes Search History in User's Activity Logs

Facebook has recently added search history to its activity log.

It was announced recently by Facebook that a personal search history will now be included in users’ Activity Logs.

To be rolled out to all users in the next few weeks, this new feature will enable users to view and delete all or some of their past searches. Currently, there is no way for users to share their search history with friends in the same way that Bing offers.

But now, Facebook users are given full access and control to what they share with their friends with their own Activity Log, with the option of being able to delete certain queries they make.

Basically, this search history feature is a drop-down recap of who or what you’ve been searching for when you type things into that search box at the top of your news feed. By clicking the button on your activity log, you will be able to see everything organized by date and query term, via both desktop and mobile sites. And, you will also be able to delete your search terms at any time, just like you can with the stuff you’ve shared through Timeline.

It seems that this new feature hints at Facebook’s plans entering the search realm, as what was promised by founder Mark Zuckerberg earlier this month.

Facebook’s moves into the world of web search have long been awaited by analysts and the search engine optimization expert community since Google had announced their own social platform. This is because both are in the position to collect massive amounts of social data as well as employ it in personalized web searches.

A Quick Review on Facebook's iOS App

It’s time for SEO Service providers to intensify site’s mobile optimization as Facebook’s faster iOS App is finally here!

With approximately 500 million users accessing Facebook through their mobile phone and in June 2011, iPhone applications were reported to have hit one billion in nine months, as well as Facebook having added 100 million users in less than nine months, it seems there is a very significant need for Search Engine Optimization Experts to super-intensify their mobile SEO optimization campaigns.

Just recently, Facebook had finally rolled out its massive update of its iOS app, with iOS app version 5.0, offering to be a much better, faster, more native experience to users.

In June, The New York Times was told by two Facebook developers that a native rewrite was on the works for Facebook’s iOS App.

Now, describes as being “rebuilt so it’s faster and easier to use,” Facebook new iOS App v.5 features:
  • iOS app build in Objective-C, making the app 2.5 times faster
  • app opens much faster
  • photos load, and the feed shows new stories twice as quickly
  • news feed remarkably responsive that reacts instantly at the slightest flick of a finger with a high frame rate
  • navigation sidebar slides out much more crisply
  • notifications load right when you open Facebook
  • content cached between views
  • all the Messenger standalone app features are now built in
  • a drop-down “new stories” banner that can alert you to fresh news feed content in real-time
  • a Facebook for iPad app update that finally supports viewing of Timeline on the device
This massive overhaul to its Facebook iOS App was done in answer to the many criticisms of it being slow and unresponsive. This slowness is partly due to the old app’s reliance on HTML5. Though a great way to build cross-platform, mobile-friendly apps and web pages are not as fast for certain types of applications.

According to Facebook’s iOS mobile product manager Mick Johnson, “We feel the pain points [regarding slowness] pretty harshly ourselves…so this major update to the Facebook for iOS app is focused on one thing — speed.”

New Facebook Group's Updates Released

Several updates for its Groups product, including photo album sharing and Questions publishing, in-Group search, and admin approval for new members, have been released by Facebook.

A new “Send” button social plugin, that allows users to share third-party websites to Groups, specific friends, or email addresses has also been launched by Facebook

These updates enhance trust in the privacy of Groups, provide more content types to be shared, answer the requests of old group admins, and give third-party sites and brands a way to benefit from Facebook’s focus on sharing with relevant subsets of friends.

Groups are launched by Facebook to provide an alternative to sharing with all of one’s friends. Facebook surmises that if given an easy and trustworthy way to restrict the distribution of content that was deem sensitive by users or those that are only relevant to a few people such as planning an event with friends, splitting bills with roommates, sharing ideas with co-workers or discussing intimate family matters, then Facebook users would share more often.

Another update on Facebook's Group is admins of Closed and Secret Groups that can now require all new additional members to be approved by an admin; thus, increasing trust in the product’s privacy. Peter Deng, Project Manager, says that though early adopters have been savvy about learning [the utility of Groups], there is still a need to educate to make this use case more prominent. Now, users who were not part of a Group before will be shown a tour outlining features and controls.

Users can also now publish Facebook Questions to a Group’s feed to help users question the preferences of their Groups. Austin Haugen, Facebook Platform Product Manager, says that “Since we first launched Like button, it’s been a great tool for broadcasting, but it never nailed the use case to share something relevant to certain people.” Now, the new Send button social plugin for third-party websites solves this in a way that’s complementary to the Like button.

Facebook users starting today will see the Send button on over 50 websites, including The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Orbitz, 1-800 Flowers, People.com, Gilt Groupe, and Last.fm. The button when clicked opens a Facebook post publisher pre-populated with the current view content. Users have the choice of publishing to the feed of one of their Groups, to specific friends through Facebook Messages, or to email addresses.

Search engine optimization experts observed that the Send button creates a big opportunity for professional SEO providers and web publishers of niche content; however, users might not want to share with all their friends or services that benefit from group planning such as travel or gifting.

Facebook Launches New Version of Questions Tool

It has already been almost a year since Facebook beta tested the new version of their Questions feature and now it is already released.

The new version of Questions focused more on asking questions to friends and soliciting recommendations based on their answers.

According to Adrian Graham, product manager of Questions, we can just easily ask anybody on the internet different questions. But it is much better to get responses and answers from people you know and people you can trust to make sure that they have given the right answers for your needs.

The updated version of Questions tool will be tried out to current testers. When these testers will start to ask questions, the new feature will automatically spread this to their friends. The application is only available in English for now.

When asking a question, users will be able to create a poll with restricted answers or that user can create a poll where it allows just about anybody to answer. For questions that don’t work with a poll format, the comment section becomes the answer section. With this new feature, questions can be answered and commented on within newsfeeds and profile pages. When a friend participates and answers your questions, then the questions will be posted to his or her profile page. When we get responses from the users, each option’s box fills to know how popular an option is. This way, viewers see the poll questions and results altogether. Facebook also includes the profile photos of the users who responded next to the options they selected.

These are just a few of the changes done in Facebook. All you have to do is see it for yourself and try it. It is you who can judge whether this feature works better compared to the unedited one. So there is no time waiting. Open your Facebook account and try out this new feature, you might get hooked.

Facebook Unveils New Features on its Comments Box

March 4, 2011 - Facebook has consistently been on the top from among the many social networking sites in the world. With hundreds of millions of subscribers hooked to it, there is definitely no reason why it will not update its features.

Just recently, Facebook has released the newest update to its Comments Plugin. The comments plugin is where one is able to post comments on another’s site and this includes moderation tools and distribution. The newest update includes robust features like threaded comments, controls on moderation, and the ability to sync comments to a Facebook page. The last feature allows for more varied and widespread comments on a site.

This latest feature of the comments plugin only allows a user to comment on a facebook account. This means that in order to comment, one has to log in to his facebook account and then write his comment. There was an initial move to allow commenting from a Twitter account but the functionality was not allowed.

This update has several key user features. One is social commenting and context. With this, a facebook user is able to get more context by looking at the details of the commenter which are strategically placed right beside the commenter’s name. Details such as mutual friends and work profile are indicated. Another one is the “best comments first” where the best and most relevant comments are placed on top. Third is moderation where spammers are reported as abusers to avoid flooding of comments. Fourth is easy sharing where users can click “post to facebook” and have their comments posted on their walls. Finally is the threaded conversation which allows syncing with other sites.

Facebook continues to update its system to give its users the convenience and enjoyment they truly deserve.
